2027 Field Safety Course (5 days) External
UNIS Field Safety Course 18–22 January 2027– External Participants
The course provides an introduction to the most relevant field safety disciplines on Svalbard and is based on UNIS’s 30 years of field experience in the Arctic. It draws upon up-to-date scientific knowledge from our academic departments, as well as risk and safety theory from the Arctic Safety Centre. The main focus of the course is to enable participants to make sound judgments and avoid potentially dangerous situations in the field.

Participation requirements

Participants must be at least 18 years old.

Participants must have a good working knowledge of English.

Participants must be prepared for practical outdoor exercises in Arctic winter conditions.
A detailed programme and practical information will be sent to registered participants before the course.
Registration and Payment
Individual participants must register and pay by card through Stripe. when signing up online.
For companies registering three or more participants at the same time, we can register participants manually and invoice the company directly.

Cancellation and Refund Policy
Registration is binding. The following cancellation terms apply:

More than 7 days before the course starts: Full refund.

7 days or less before the course starts: No refund.
If UNIS needs to cancel the course due to weather conditions, illness or other unforeseen circumstances, the full course fee will be refunded.
Each course requires a minimum number of participants. If this requirement is not met, the course may be cancelled at short notice, normally one to two working days before the scheduled start. In such cases, the full course fee will be refunded.
Information about cancellations will be sent to the email address provided during registration.

Participants will rotate between theoretical and practical training modules in smaller groups.

Friday, 22 January 2027
17:00 – Course wrap-up and social gathering
The course concludes with an evaluation and a social gathering with pizza and refreshments in the UNIS canteen.
Course Content – Lesson Descriptions
Basic Field Safety Principles on Svalbard
Approximately 1 hour – indoors
An introduction to the natural hazards and environmental conditions on Svalbard, providing a foundation for understanding field safety and the challenges of operating in an Arctic environment.
Risk Theory and Accident Scene Management
Approximately 1 hour – indoors
Introduction to basic risk assessment, decision-making and the risk management principles used by UNIS. The session also covers fundamental principles of accident scene management.
Arctic Weather, Clothing and Personal Equipment
Approximately 1 hour – indoors
An introduction to Arctic winter weather and its influence on field safety, including appropriate clothing and personal equipment for different activities and conditions.
Emergency Equipment and Establishment of an Emergency Camp
Approximately 4 hours – indoors and outdoors
Practical demonstrations and exercises focusing on emergency equipment, its use and the establishment of an emergency camp in Arctic winter conditions.
Communication and Navigation
Approximately 4 hours – indoors and outdoors
Introduction to communication and navigation equipment used during field activities on Svalbard, followed by practical exercises using the equipment.
Polar Bear Safety
1 full day – indoors and outdoors
Introduction to polar bear behaviour, risk assessment and preventive safety measures. Includes practical scenarios and training in the safe handling and use of firearms and deterrents for polar bear protection.
Safe Travel on Sea Ice and Buddy Rescue
Approximately 4 hours – indoors and outdoors
Introduction to sea ice hazards, safe travel practices and rescue techniques. Practical exercises include self-rescue and buddy rescue.
Safe Travel on Snow-Covered Glaciers and Buddy Rescue
Approximately 4 hours – indoors and outdoors
Introduction to glacier hazards and safe travel practices, including practical exercises in basic companion rescue techniques on snow-covered glaciers.
Safe Travel in Avalanche-Prone Terrain and Companion Rescue
Approximately 4 hours – indoors and outdoors
Introduction to avalanche hazards, terrain assessment and safe travel practices. Includes practical exercises in companion rescue following an avalanche accident.
First Aid in Arctic Field Conditions
Approximately 4 hours – indoors and outdoors
Basic first aid, including primary assessment using the ABCDE approach, prevention and treatment of cold-related injuries, and management of common injuries associated with outdoor activities on Svalbard.
