UNIS Field Safety Course for External and new eployees Participants 18–22 January 2026
UNIS hereby invites you to participate in a field safety course organized by UNIS from 18 to 22 January 2027. The course content is identical to the mandatory safety course that all UNIS students and staff must complete at the start of the spring semester each year.
The course provides an introduction to the most relevant field safety disciplines on Svalbard and is based on UNIS’s 30 years of field experience in the Arctic. It draws upon up-to-date scientific knowledge from our academic departments, as well as risk and safety theory from the Arctic Safety Centre. The main focus of the course is to enable participants to make sound judgments and avoid potentially dangerous situations in the field.

Basic field safety principles on Svalbard
Theoretical lesson focusing on the nature given natural hazards on Svalbard. The lesson serves an introduction the safety course, giving the necessary background information and setting the stage. About 1 hour, indoors at UNIS.
Risk theory and accident scene management
Theoretical lesson and discussions focusing on the risk theories that UNIS build our risk management system and safety training on. Principles for accident scene management. About 1 hour, indoors at UNIS.
Arctic weather and choice of clothing
Theoretical lesson, discussions, and presentation of main characteristics of winter weather on Svalbard and choice of clothing and personal equipment for different activities. About 1 hour, indoors at UNIS.
Emergency camp equipment and establishment of an emergency camp
Practical lesson with demonstrations and exercise, focusing on choice of correct safety equipment and establishment of an emergency camp. About 4 hours, in- and outdoors, at UNIS.
Communication and navigation tools and procedures
Practical lesson with demonstrations of relevant communication and navigation equipment as well as practical exercises in use of this equipment. About 4 hours, in- and outdoors, at UNIS.
Polar bear safety
Theoretical introduction to polar bear safety, practical case exercises and use of firearms and deterrents for polar bear protection. 1 full day, indoors at UNIS, in Adventdalen and at the rifle range.
Safe travel on sea and buddy rescue techniques
Theoretical introduction to safe travel on sea ice and practical case exercises in buddy rescue techniques on sea ice. Includes practical, live exercise in how to get up from a hole in the ice. About 4 hours, indoors at UNIS and at Isdammen.
Safe travel on snow covered glaciers and buddy rescue techniques.
Theoretical introduction to safe travel on snow covered glaciers and practical case exercises in buddy rescue techniques on glaciers. About 4 hours, indoors at UNIS and outside Forskningsparken.
Safe travel in avalanche prone terrain and buddy rescue techniques
Theoretical introduction to safe travel in avalanche prone terrain and practical case exercises in buddy rescue techniques in an avalanche accident. About 4 hours, indoors at UNIS and outside Forskningsparken
First aid with primary examination and review of common injuries in Svalbard field.
Basic first aid with primary examination ABCDE. We also review. in how to prevent and treat cold related injuries and other common injuries related to outdoors activities on Svalbard. About 4 hours, indoors at UNIS and outside Forskningsparken
Course evaluation and round off.
Course evaluation and round off at UNIS. Social gathering with pizza and beverages in the UNIS cantina.
