 students\, staff and projects connected to UNIS\n\nThis course will provi
 de the participants with an introduction to polar bear safety and the nec
 essary skills for safely handling a rifle and flare gun.\n\nImportant Inf
 ormation\n\nSafety courses listed below are for students\, staff and pro
 jects connected to UNIS. All students participating in a UNIS course will
  automatically be added to relevant safety training.\n\nCourses open for 
 external participants will be found under the sub category "Arctic Safet
 y Center" when available.\n\n \n\nGeneral information: \n\nStarting tim
 e: 08:30\n\nDuration: 7h\n\nLocation: UNIS + Shooting range\n\nCourse sta
 rts with a 1h lecture at UNIS on the topic of polar bear safety.  After 
 the lecture we travel together to the shooting range by car or buss. At 
  the shooting range there will be a combination of theory and practical 
 training on safe handling of fire arms.\n\nWhat to bring:\n\nWarm Clothin
 g\n\nSuitable thin gloves\n\nLunch\n\nThe course focuses on the following
  themes:  \n\nHow to plan activities in nature to avoid conflicts with 
 polar bears \n\nHow to accomplish fieldwork and outings to avoid near me
 etings and conflicts with polar bears\n\nHow to solve a conflict situatio
 n without injury to humans or wildlife \n\nHow to solve a conflict situa
 tion where one must shoot and kill a polar bear. \n\nSafe handling of fi
 rearms (rifle) and pyrotechnic flares for polar bear protection \n\nPrac
 tical use of firearms and pyrotechnic flares for polar bear protection 
 \n\nThe course is held over 1 day and consists of: \n\nTheory lesson on 
 polar bears and polar bear behavior \n\nPractical case exercises on how 
 to avoid and solve conflict situations  \n\nSafety regulations for fire
 arms handling  \n\nPractical exercises in safe rifle handling \n\nShoo
 ting 16 - 20 live rounds from a knee standing position  \n\nUse of flar
 e guns as polar bear deterrent \n\nMaintenance and cleaning of firearms
